Nightmare on Vista Avenue

A pixel-art graveyard side-scroller made for a Halloween party.

Click the game to start, then use the arrow keys. Sound is on; press M to mute. On a phone, open it full screen for the on-screen buttons.

Overview

A browser game that doubles as the invitation to my Halloween birthday party. Players type in their name, then run down Vista Avenue dodging dancing skeletons, spinning pumpkins, flying ghosts and dropping spiders to reach a Dracula-castle door. Behind it, the Keeper asks three questions about me. Miss the last one and the ghosts swarm, though you can always resurrect and try again. Get it right and the sunrise chases them away, and you can RSVP right from the game.

Built with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript on a tiny 320×180 canvas, scaled up for crisp pixels. There are no image files: every sprite is drawn from a small grid of characters, and the sound effects come from a little synthesizer written with the Web Audio API.

How to Play

  • Up jumps.
  • Right runs forward and Left runs back.
  • Down ducks under ghosts.
  • Enter picks an answer.

You get three lives to make it down Vista Avenue. Reach the castle door, answer the Keeper, and RSVP for the party.
